Street Fighter 2 + XBL Arcade = “I Got Next”

QuarterOkay, this news is way old but It’s so cool that it deserves a post. Microsoft seems to be getting it right with XBox Live for the 360. They’ve released some excellent XBL Arcade titles like Geometry Wars that are as popular as their Premium 360 games. They’ve also revolutionized content delivery with downloadable movie previews and game demos.

Microsoft’s latest XBL innovation comes in the form of Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting for XBL Arcade. More than just some run-of-the-mill port, Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting is a fully realized online version of the Arcade experience.

What do we mean by “Arcade Experience”? Well, it has a “Quarter Mode” wherein players can place a virtual quarter on the game screen to reserve their match against the winner. How stinking cool is that! This is actually a feature that Team Squat have been talking about now for a good year, and it’s great to see that Microsoft implemented it.

Other great features include a Spectator Mode, fully mappable button layout, voice support, and leaderboards. Too bad it’s only SF2 so we won’t be able to Parry Dat. Oh well, I guess you can’t have it all…

SF 3rdstrikeSo Wiggy and I have been talking about talking about this arcade in our area for a while. They hold regular fighting game and music game tournaments, and have the most impressive selection of these games you’ve ever seen. Wiggy, My Wife, and I finally got to go last night.

After playing percussion master for a bit, we decided to have a couple rounds of Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike. Well, we must’ve been making too much noise with all our yelling and imitation squatting, because we attracted the attention of some serious Street Fighter 3 gamers. While we put up a good fight, won a couple of rounds, and even got a few squatalities in there – We pretty much got 0wn-ded.

Even though we lost, it was an awesome challenge – and I learned a couple of things I need to work on if I want to get better at Street Fighter 3.

Aside from their skill, which cannot be denied, they won by glitching. So, I’m going to have to learn how to exploit some glitches to juggle my opponent like they did. My parry game is good, but I need to link combos and supers better after the parry. I also regret not using my arcade stick at home. I’ve gotten so used to the xbox controller that when I go to the arcade I have to re-learn how to use the stick.

Anyways, aside from learning the holes in my Street Fighter 3 skills, we found an excellent arcade, with tons of great games, and some fierce competition to boot. Not bad for a monday night.

Street Fighter 3 “Squatalities”

akuma-squatality“Pretty Cool, Huh! It’s my Squatality”

Fighting game finishing moves ARE pretty cool. Back in 1992, Mortal Kombat gave birth to the finishing move. Since then, however, the franchise has long gone stagnant in it’s gameplay while simultaneously becoming more ultra-violent. Other 2D fighters like Street Fighter and King of Fighters have continued to grow but still lack the ultimate pwnage of the finishing move.

Street Fighter 3 – 3rd Strike, with cool features like taunts that hit & leaving the winning player in your control for a few seconds after the final blow, allows for some interesting “Custom” finishing moves that I call “Squatalities”.

Being the creative gamers we are, Wiggy and I have developed a number of these Squatalities that exploit these features and leave your oppenent feeling like they got stood up on Prom Night…
