And the winner is….

Posted February 20, 2008 at 3:36 pm by HeatGuyJ

So apparently Blu-ray officially wins the Hi-Def format wars (…so glad I bought a PS3). Toshiba announced yesterday that it will discontinue their HD DVD business. This is a HUGE deal as Toshiba was a major partner of companies like Microsoft and Paramount Pictures in the format war on the HD DVD side. This comes after companies like Warner Bros., Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Netflix announced that they would support Blu-ray disc exclusively, ending their previous support of both formats. Here’s a recent time line of events…

01/04/08 - Warner Bros announced that it will be Blu-Ray exclusive effective June 1, 2008.02/11/08 - Netflix announces they will be going Blu-ray exclusive and will no longer purchase new HD DVD’s.

02/12/08 - Best Buy annouces that they will prominently showcase Blu-ray titles and hardware to “eliminate confusion” for buyers.

02/15/08 - Wal-Mart announces that they will no longer carry HD DVD offerings and only support Blu-ray.

02/19/08 - Toshiba, a major player in the format war, announces that they will will no longer develop, manufacture or market HD DVD players and recorders. They will continue to support users who currently have HD DVD players.

02/20/08 - Amazon announces that they will now support Blu-ray as the high definition digital format of choice for consumers.

How did Blu-ray pull out the win? Well, simply put, Sony Playstation 3 helped tremendously. Sony so far has sold about 10.5 million PS3’s that come with Blu-ray players built in. This is big, because sales of stand alone Blu-ray or HD DVD players was kind of at a stand still, because consumers didn’t want to buy one player over the other and then be stuck when one loses. Well, if you bought a PS3 the Blu-ray player is kind of like a bonus for the consumer. For the makers of the Blu-ray format, that’s 10.5 million homes that already have a player. That’s a big edge. I’m still surprised that Microsoft didn’t make the HD DVD player a built in on the Xbox360 instead of an add on. I guess they didn’t have much faith in it.
Now I’m just waiting for Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks, who are HD DVD exclusive to jump ship and come over to the winning team. I’ll be expecting Transformers on Blu-ray pretty soon.

Well I was a fairweather fan of HD-DVD just because Blu-ray was Sony and I hate Sony with a passion. But thankfully the blow doesn’t come too hard since Sony is allowing other companies to make Blu-ray players. I’m just glad I didn’t invest in an HD-DVD drive for my xbox 360 lol.

All this aside though, high def DVD’s are WAY early. Double layer DVD’s are so great, and they are JUST not being heavily used in the industry. There really is little to no different using a double layer DVD and a Blu-ray DVD on a typical TV (36″ and below) that a regular person can see. I’ve seen Spiderman 3 on Blu-ray and I thought Casino Royale (which is a double layer DVD) looked just as good. It’s not even worth it unless you have a HUGE TV. My boss has a 60 inch DLP TV and he says he sees hardly any different on his Blu-ray.

Once the day arrives, high def dvd’s will look great but for right now (I would say at LEAST a yeah and a half) double layer DVD’s will rule the pack. And even beyond that, double layer DVD’s will not die quickly nor will they look bad, they will be around for the next few years, guarenteed.

On a side note, not because I’m a fan of HD-DVD, but I’m VERY surprised that everyone sold out so quick and dropped it as a format. It’s equally superior to Blu-ray and even superior when it comes to various features that Blu-ray is JUST now getting, things like director commentary and such. There are multiple versions of each format that support various capacities and the highest HD-DVD capacity is almost as much as the typical Blu-ray disc.

    Ah well.
