Sidekick Game Reviews: Part 1
Posted April 5, 2006 at 8:30 am by tronsta
So I’m such a gamer that I even need to support my habit by playing these goofy little games for my T-mobile Sidekick. I’ve had both the SKI and SKII and I gotta say they’re pretty nifty. They give the most bang for the buck that I’ve seen in a while in terms of tech, though they are far from flawless. These days, 300 or so bucks will get you a Treo which is more powerful but not nearly as sexay.
Anyways, I haven’t been able to find much in terms of SK game reviews, so why not post some of my own? I’m a t00l, I’ve bought and played the vast majority of SK games, so I’ll be doing reviews in series.
First things first…it’s the Sidekick. It’s not a PSP, it’s not a DS, so we have to give special consideration for all these games. You kind of have to appreciate games pre-Nintendo to truly enjoy these app’s, so let’s all remember that before we start laughing and poking fun at the poor SK and it’s inferior hardware.
For this first round of reviews, I’m mainly going to focus on ports or otherwise recreations of classic video games brought to the SK. I’ve been pretty impressed with these, so here they are:
*Dig Dug*
Yeah the game doesn’t have hours upon hours of thrilling gameplay, but there is something exciting about shoving your bike pump tube down a dragon’s mouth and pumping it full of air untit it bursts green goo all over you. Ok yeah there’s no green goo, but it’s still fun. Complete with the music and sounds, Dig Dug is perfectly accurate to the original game. Worth buying if you like the little blue boy in his white painter’s suit.
*Galaga*
Space shooters from the early 80’s! Teh hawt. Aside from the alien-killing sound that doesn’t sound like the original, this game is 100 percent faithful to the original. Great game play. Just don’t have anything else running on your SK to make sure you get full processing speed on this one. Lots of fun. And no, I don’t like letting my shipget captured.
*Tetris*
Another great one for the SK. Tetris provides hours of gameplay that we all know and love. There’s a few extra modes, like Time Attack and Marathon, which are interesting. Certainly worth it if you like Tetris. Only problem is sometimes if your SK hiccups while receiving email or an IM or text msg, the game suffers a tad.
*Ikari Warriors*
Wow. This game first came out as a “gift” to SK users when there was a huge network outage that lasted a few days. I promptly snatched this bad boy up. You HAVE to make sure your SK is not doing anything else when you play this game, it’s very graphic-intensive, having lots of sprites on the screen at once. The sound is crappy, but the graphics and gameplay are just like the original, making nice use of the SKII roller bar to control which direction you’re firing in. Has a pretty high level of difficulty in a few of the last boards, makes it a good game. Worth buying now, I think.
*Bubble Bobble*
I dunno what it is about this game, but I HAD to play through all the 99 levels to get to the last boss, which took a while for me to beat, but I be heem, I be heem! (Domican Lou from SNL) Great port, though the control is a TAD annoying. If you like the original, this is WAY worth it for you.
*PENGO*
While I never played the original, I’m told this game has a small cult following. Regardless, I’m not a fan of it. It looks like the original but I think the gameplay is whack. But, if you loved the original, it’s worth it.
That’s all the true ports/redux that I’ve played. They have both Ms. PACMAN and PACMAN, Space Invaders, and a few other classics, but I have not tried them yet.
Next up, Part 2…originals!

Good review Tronny.
The Sidekick’s controls are suprisingly well-suited for gaming. It’s cool that they have so many retro titles. They’ve got the right idea–If your hardware can’t handle the good current-gen games, get the best retro ones.
(Uncle Rico voice) “Right On… Right On…”
P.S. - I thnk that Image cracked my monitor from the inside. Das ugly!
