Getting Lost - Dreams of a Lost MMO

Posted February 23, 2006 at 7:16 am by Spamalot

Walt 0wnedLOST was a rerun of Pilot parts 1 & 2 so there’s no sense in recapping it… except for the guy getting sucked into the engine. How scary was that?

Anyway, while we wait for a new episode we can chat it up about the next one. However I’ve been thinking allot about what a LOST MMO would be like.

A traditional MMO structure probably wouldn’t work since it would take away from the isolated atmosphere needed. Solution: Multiple islands! Each island would have three sets of 100 people - Front Section, Tail Section, and Others. (Maybe the Others should be NPCs.)

You could stick with the group or live like Danielle in the wilderness and set traps for Others. Or you could find a hatch and live plush, but you have to punch in the numbers every now and then. Boar hunting, fishing, healing your wounds (ala Snake Eater), fashioning tools and weapons from sticks would be neat mini-games.

Encounters with Others would be frightening, and running from or outsmartting them with a trap would be necessary. Every now and then the smoke monster would bust out.

Weird stuff that appears on the island would come from other islands. (Think beechcraft) Not all the islands would take place at the same time, so blow something up in one game and it’s there covered in moss in a later game. Communication with other islands is also possible.

Discuss.

that’d be VERY cool. i find that idea amazing. you’re a very smart man. the groups of 100 idea is amazing. you could have doctors, hunters, fishers, gatherers, trappers, mappers, electronics dudes, hoarders, etc. all these dudes working together or NOT. wow.

the others would attack! the smoke monster would attack! you could discover artifacts and clues from the wreckage, you could find the hatches, the black rock, etc. there could be MOLES! dudes who betray and steal stuff. in-clan fights for decision-making power. clan splitting between the beach and the caves and different pros and cons for that. my mind is exploding!

    Thanks for calling me smart!

The mole idea is great. There could be a player who doesn’t talk that everyone assumes is a human player without a microphone. It would end up being an Other (An NPC, of course). It would proceed to bumrush the weakest…

Great ideas. To make the player’s decisions that much more important to the game, and make them more serious, though, I would say institute perma-death, aka you got one life and if you die, you gotta roll up another character. This would be good so you wouldn’t be so gung-ho to face down the scary smoke monster thingie so quickly.

Such an awesome idea. You’d definitely have to have perma-death. Imagine a horde of n00bs going after the others with sharpened sticks. They would get pwned instantly.

Perma-death is a great idea. It would really make you scared when you’re hunting boar and you hear that alarm go off. Running away from monster. *Button jamming mini-game anyone?*

You learn more about LOST reading wikipedia than you do from actually watching the show, hehe.

On this page I learned that the producers confirmed that the “Alex” that the others leader (Zeke, as Sawyer calls him) reffered to in the episode The Hunting Party is in fact Rousseau’s baby!

    Teh Wuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut!
