Getting Lost - Episode 2.14 “One of Them”
Posted February 17, 2006 at 9:40 am by tronstaAight gent’s, here we go, an official SquatSquat.Com Lost thread.
So we all know what happened last episode. I found a nifty little pic that has a translation for those weird glyphs seen when the machine hit 0 and no one hit the code in. You start to hear weird things opening, heavy metal machinary, then Locke hits the code, AFTER the numbers had already hit zero, with one more glyph left to flip open, and it resets. So they find out they have more time than they thought. They also find that SOMETHING WILL FOR SURE happen if the timer runs out. Whether or not that will kill them will remain to be seen.

Notice that little word there?
DIE!?
HMMMMMMMMMM, naughty Dharma! Actually looks like Sword Causes Die. Or in more general terms, it WILL kill them.
We see for the next episode, Dharma is involved somehow in the disappearance of our resident Australian Mommy, who’s name escapes me for some reason at the moment. That then connects Dharma, directly or indirectly, with the Others. WEIRD!
Ok so theories…
My original theory, though the minute details are changing a bit, remains the same overall. The island is an experiment. The grandest in human bahavioral experiments ever to be seen on the planet. Is it just chance that EVERYONE so far that we’ve gotten familiar with has a REASON to be on that island? A reason to be stranded away from their life back on the mainlands? Is it just chance that they are all connected somehow in weird little ways? Is it coincidence that those EXACT numbers that Hurley used to win the lottery showed up on the island?
I say the island is a huge experiment in human bahavior, created by Dharma. That guy that was in the hatch that first met Jack in the stadium? He worked for Dharma, but he obviously was oblivious to the plot, making him PART of the experiment.
Now, I thought, until last week, like Jack, that nothing would happen when the countdown was left to zero. But, based on all that machine movement when the 0 hit, coupled with the knowledge that Dharma was involved somehow in Aussie gal’s abduction, and lord knows what else, and seeing that Dharma obviously has prepared itself to allow human casuality for their grand scheme, coupled with the fact that those glyphs have DIE in them, I believe something WILL happen if the count is not reset. I doubt Dharma would allow the whole island to be destroyed, but I think something bad will happen.
Dharma is crazy, and I don’t think they care if most of their test subjects die.
How do all the Others and Zeke’s crew fit in? It seems obvious the Others are part of the experiment, and Dharma doesn’t care if they die. But Ethan seemed like he was genetically enhanced, or highly trained. He pwnd everyone, there was no chance they could have taken him down before Charlie shot him. But what about the hillbillie and his tribe?? I dunno, but I don’t believe they are part of the Others, but I DO believe they know about the Others and have some kind of involvement with them. I believe that Zeke’s tribe was another Dharma experiement that is still going on. These people have been there a LONG time and have been grizzled and enbittered by their experience. They are pure survivalists now, and don’t care if they bump into other people.
Though, one could argue that since they took Walt, maybe the ARE the Others.
Oh no, I’ve gone cross-eyed…
DISCUSS!

A little theme that keeps resonating: old habits die hard. Sayid. The Torturer. That gave me chills. Mannn.
As for that dude they found: DID YOU SEE THAT LAST LOOK HE GAVE SAYID?! he is one of the “Others.” No doubt about it. Sayid tenderized him BUT GOOD and he didn’t budge. Frenchy was right about him.
As for the clock running out and Locke punching the code real quick: RUBBISH! still, it was neat to see those weird symbols pop up. I’ve said this a million times: they will TRULY let the clock run out in the LAST episode of this season. THAT will be the cliffhanger. My words. Mark ‘em.
The Claire flashback to the days she lost are finally surfacing. I knew they’d do that. Can’t wait.
This experiment is making my head hurt. I think we’ll learn some stuff about it next episode.

I thought that too, that nothing would happen. Dharma is crazy, though. They “warned” people not to let the clock die out. They’re serious enough to “punish” people if they don’t do what’s told. Yeah granted, if the fate of the WORLD was at stake, the employees would have been better informed. Yeah I don’t think that letting the clock run out will make the world (and the show) end, BUT I do think something is set up that will “punish” the people that allowed the clock to run out. As a lesson. To teach the survivors (of the clock accident) that next time, they should listen to warnings.
Don’t forget, they saw in the Dharma tape references to BF Skinner, specificially that the founders of Dharma were following in his footsteps. Know who that is? A famous psychologist that specialized in human behavior, specifically operant conditioning, which, as quoted from Wikipedia, is “Operant conditioning, so named by psychologist B. F. Skinner, is the modification of behavior brought about over time by the consequences of said behavior.”
Don’t be surprised if that Dharma employee who left the bunker was either “collected” or “punished” for leaving his post.

Thanks for doing the LOST post this week Tron, I’ve been too busy ripping my Season 1 DVD for my PSP, hehe.
Yeah, I have a crazy theory about the island. It’s been *more than hinted at* that Walt’s subconcious makes things happen (Think polarbear). I think that all or parts of the island are materialized from Walt’s imagination and the plane crash was caused by his emotional distress over losing his mother and being taken by Michael.
I believe the dharma initiative had been watching Walt, And knew that his subconcious would cause the crash, bringing him, and the rest of their test subjects to the island. Walt himself is not fully aware of his powers.
It’s possible that they also killed his mom and had brian (in on it) give him to michael to orchestrate the whole thing. The Others are the “enforcers” of the Dharma initiative, their watchdogs.
Anyways, about the ep, thought the glyphs were cool. I think if the clock runs down, the whole island gets overrun with that cloud thing, pwning all.
Sayid “the Torturer” (Read: Teh 0wnerer)–awesome. I love how they flesh out Sayid’s character without getting preachy or political overmuch. And I noticed Kates Pops right away.
That prisoner has “Other” tatooed on his forehead. Sayid was right about his story not holding water. I read somewhere that the prisoner is signed on for 5 more eps, so we should know in a month or so.

Interesting theory. I like that. But the only problem is how connected all the other characters are. I wonder if that’s just a sick twisted turn of fate or if they targetted that particular flight on purpose.
And let’s not forget about Jack’s mysteriously disappearing corpse-dad.

All theories on this show have problems, leading to that LOST feeling. Im probably wrong, but I’m running with it for now. All the mystery is awesome. “So Dark the Con of Man” that.
Tronsta also enlightened me to something I’d never thought of… what if Zeke and Dharma are not on the same side? What if Dharma and GREG aren’t either! Will and Grace? Heath Ledger & Bubble Boy!
Oh, and great picture on the post! LOL

lol thanks. I hope Lost doesn’t turn into the Sopranos, where they untie more ends than they lash down. I don’t mind the crazy insane plot twists and turns, and forgotten questions, they just better answer everything.

What’s everyone favorite episode of Lost? Mine is the Sun/Jin ep: . . . In Translation. It was NOTE-PERFECT. Nearly every character had a moment and the stories were very well told. The dialogue was awesome. Amazing TV. We need more episodes like THAT.
