Squat Squat reviews the world’s first gaming headset for a portable system.

Search on google for information on the PSP headset, and you’ll be surprised by how little information you’ll find concerning it; Very surprising considering what an anticipated accessory it’s been. From the very second most people heard the word “online” in relation to the PSP, we’ve wanted a headset to go with it.

Don’t get me wrong, online gaming with the PSP is sweet as it is; Fluid, fast, and portable at that. However, having to wait until the postgame lobby just to type “OMG I PWNED U!!!” is just not acceptable in the modern world of gaming.

Well then, lets get on with the review then, shall we!

Design
Design-wise, this thing is everything you would expect from Sony. It’s shiny; Has PSP logos all over it; and is very sexy. As a matter of fact, it looks like a sexier version of those sporty ear clip headphones the kids wear these days. Actually, it’s basically a set of those headphones with a thin earpiece coming out of the left side.

The construction is sturdy and of very good quality. I don’t see this headset snapping so easily the way the xbox live headset is known to.

My only problem with this headset’s design is Sony’s lack of foresight in it’s planning the look of the PSP and it’s accessories. While this may seem finicky, I’ll explain. There is a black PSP and a white one. The earbuds and remote are white as is the handstrap. The soft case is black. The Headset is black. Your setup now looks like a domino and all that fanciness you paid 250+ for is gone. Bad Sony!

Sound
Unfortunately, I can’t comment on the headset’s performance during online play since I don’t have a copy of Socom: Fire Team Bravo. (The only game supported at this time) Once I rent it, I’ll update this post with info on how it does.

As for the sound coming into the headset’s speakers, it’s probably just a little better than the stock PSP earbuds. So while this headset may look like an expensive set of booming headphones, it isn’t. However, if you aren’t an audiophile and you don’t mind looking like you’re on the phone while using them, than the headset can be used as a full headphones replacement.

Comfort
The PSP headset fits very comfortably. As a test of comfort, I wore it around the house for several hours and forgot I was wearing it. The microphone hugs the side of your face tightly but It’s smooth, soft finish makes it non-irritating.

The Bottom Line
The official Sony PSP headset’s sleek look, good sound, quality, and comfortable fit make it a great choice. (albeit the only one for now)
It’s a must for any fan of PSP online gaming, and is sure to fill the free wi-fi cafes of the world with screaming idiots complaing about lag.
